Cheers everyone! I'm Matthew and this is my "oh, that's my food" face. You can find me at @matthewxstiles. I eat, drink, and travel. I'm going to take you on a tour of Austin, Texas. Austin has a ton of amazing restaurants, food trucks, bars, and things to do. It would be impossible to show you all of them within a week so I urge you to ask your friends on the Nomly app for more suggestions.
1. PRE-FIESTA
Licha's Cantina
Lichas Cantina is located on East 6th. If you want some really good Mexican food and tasty drinks before your night out, come here. It feels as if my grandma decided to open a restaurant in her house, I love everything about this place.
2. LINE UP!
Freedmens
BBQ joints are normally lacking atmosphere. Not Freedmens. Freedmens a great barbecue dinner spot in a historic building. Their holy trinity plate is a great place to start, and if you're feeling ambitious order their Holy Mary - it's the king of bloody mary's 'round these parts.
3. QUEENS OF THE GRILL
la Barbeque
HEADS UP: la Barbecue is moving from their East Side Trailer to Quickie Pickie on East Cesar Chavez.
la Barbecue has the perfect ratio of wait time to melt in your mouth brisket, and fall off the bone pork ribs. I don't like waiting in line, and la Barbecue does it right. They offer free beer on the weekends to their patient customers. It's also BYOB so grab a six pack, gather the carnivore squad and order enough food to give you the meat sweats.
4. NOODLE ON IT
Ramen Tatsu-Ya
There are some dope ramen spots in Austin and Ramen Tatsu-Ya is killin' the noodle game. Their Lamar location offers more elbow room than most ramen restaurants and I really enjoy the funky vibe they got going on.
5. BAO CHICKA WOW
Jinya Ramen Bar
Austinites don't like to travel up north, unless you live up north. In that case you're going to need good food and drinks. Rock Rose at the Domain has plenty to choose from, one of my favorites is Jinya Ramen Bar. Jinya offers more than noodles, they have steamed pork buns which translates to 'little pillowy delicious goodness'
6. PIZZA AND BREW
Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co.
Just put an egg on it! The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. The ABGB is a beer and pizza lover's paradise. Did I mention they have live music most nights? This spot is also kid- and dog-friendly so bring the kiddos and your furry friend.
7. HAPPY HOUR VIEWS
Boiler Nine
Boiler Nine has a bar, restaurant, and observatory. I recommend their Deck Nine Observatory Bar. It's located in the historic Seaholm Power Plant. This makes for some amazing views of Lady Bird Lake. Order a frito pie or a cheese board if you're feeling fancy, then cool off with a cocktail.
8. SOME LIKE IT HOT
Tumble 22
If you like your chicks hot this is the place for you. Tumble 22 offers Nashville inspired spicy chicken sandwiches that range from 'Wimpy' to 'Fire in the hole'. I ordered 'The Southern' and it was the right amount of spicy while still being incredibly flavorful. It's definitely my favorite new food truck.
9. HOLY SCHNIKES!
Tommy Want Wingy
I LOVE me some wings. Tommy Want Wingy is one of my favorite wing places. Tommy Want Wingy is located just outside of Lustre Pearl on Rainey. It's a perfect marriage of a good time and fantastic food.
10. BRUNCH WITH A VIEW
Jacoby's
Jacoby's has a phenomenal brunch, one of the best brunches I've had and their service has always been spectacular. They have an awesome outdoor garden where you can relax and have a drink with views of the Colorado River.
11. EGG ON IN MY FACE
South Congress Cafe
Wanna brunch so hard? Go to South Congress Cafe! It's a great spot to bring friends and family. Order eggs benedict, have a few mimosas, and take a tour of South Congress where there's plenty of shopping and live music to fill up your weekend.
12. TRULY AMAZING
Forthright
If you find yourself downtown for breakfast or lunch, Forthright is a great spot. They offer ready to go breakfast tacos, and sandwiches for lunch. If you have more time, dine in and you won't be disappointed. Also, their avocado toast is a game changer.
13. DATE NIGHT BITES
Launderette
Known for their famous Plancha Burger, Launderette is the definition of "less is more" and a great date night spot. You're going to get terrific food, and fantastic cocktails in a casual atmosphere and won't seem like you're trying too hard.
